The upcoming election on November 5, 2024, is not just another date on the calendar, it's a pivotal moment that will dictate California's business environment for years to come. For business owners in Temecula Valley, the stakes couldn't be higher. This election holds the power to impact regulations, taxes, and growth opportunities. It's imperative that local business leaders engage, understand the pressing issues, and make their voices heard at the polls.

Key Issues on the Ballot

This year, voters will decide on 10 Propositions that have far-reaching implications for business and community life. The Southwest California Legislative Council (SWCLC) has published a voter guide with recommendations on business-friendly legislation. Here are a few highlights:

No on Prop 33 - Prohibit State Limitations on Local Rent Control

  • This proposition could worsen California's housing crisis by discouraging new construction and increasing housing costs.
  • It proposes allowing up to 539 local rental boards to dictate rental housing terms, leading to unpredictable local rent control ordinances that could drive up rents further.
  • For property owners and developers, this could mean more bureaucratic red tape, making it harder to develop critical affordable housing.

Yes on Prop 36 - Drug and Theft Crime Penalties and Treatment

  • Originally passed in 2014, Prop 47 aimed to promote equity in the justice system but led to unintended consequences like increased retail theft and challenges in drug and mental health treatment.
  • Prop 36 seeks to address these issues by adjusting penalties and enhancing treatment options, thus aiming to reduce repeat offenses and support community safety.
